Serotek Helps Aging New Mexicans Regain Computer Use

System Access Deemed ‘Route to Freedom'

Minneapolis , Minn. – August 22, 2007 – Serotek Corporation, the leading provider of Internet and digital information accessibility software and services, announces the final grant report for “Route to Freedom” has been published. This Quality of Life grant was intended to provide specialized software to assist aging New Mexicans who are blind or losing vision to use their computers without sight. The National Federation of the Blind of New Mexico (NFBNM), the grant applicant, decided to focus exclusively on Serotek's System Access software. After deployment, survey results showed a 100 percent positive response from users.

“As baby boomers age, we will be seeing a much higher incidence of visual impairment, low vision and vision loss, making this technology more mainstream than ever,” said Mike Calvo, CEO, Serotek Corporation, “from macular degeneration to diabetes and more, there are a number of vision challenges ahead for the world's aging population, and Serotek expects this population to demand simple computer access that is not dependent upon sight and does not require weeks of training.”

The New Mexico state legislature approved the funding of 15 “Quality of Life” grants, and the Governor's Commission on Disability selected the NFBNM as one of the recipients. Serotek helped to multiply the effective grant by providing 60 premium versions of its System Access software at a reduced rate. The New Mexico Commission for the Blind (NMCFB) delivered and installed the software.

“This grant amplifies the need for accessibility options,” added Calvo, “and Serotek is honored to have been the conduit for returning these participants to full accessibility.”

The final grant report posed the question “Did the Quality of Life grant…achieve its goal?” and the report answers the question with an emphatic “It most certainly did.” Surveys conducted with more than 50 percent of the recipients returned statements like “I'm excited,” “it's great to do my email on my own,” and “I can again use my computer.”

The final grant report is on public record. It should be noted that System Access products were formerly marketed under the name of FreedomBox.
