Camp Trains Blind and Visually Impaired Children to Use Computer and InternetMINNEAPOLIS, Minn – August 11, 2008 – Serotek Corporation, the leading provider of Internet and digital information accessibility software and services, announces its first annual Serotek Technology Camp for Children. The free day camp is available to fifteen blind children between the ages of 8 and 12. Campers are trained on a wide variety of technology hardware and software, and receive an assistive technology evaluation. The Serotek Technology Camp for Children is co-sponsored by Microsoft Corporation, Lenovo, and the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The first camp was conducted the last week in July in Cincinnati , Ohio , and the company is considering varying the location for future years to serve a broader national geography. “The sense of accomplishment and excitement among these campers affirms our participation in bringing this camp to life,” said Mike Calvo, CEO , Serotek Corporation. “We could not be more excited to be a part of the educational journey for these campers.” Lenovo donated the computers and hardware for the campers to utilize throughout the week. “The Serotek Technology Camp is emblematic of Lenovo's commitment to enhancing personal lives in a way that is borderless and mobile,” said Jameson Kelly, Inside Solution Provider Account Manager for Lenovo, “We're honored to have played a role in bringing that commitment to life for these amazing children.” The software was also provided for the week through a generous donation from Microsoft Corporation. “Helping people reach their full potential is at the heart of Microsoft's mission, said Dan Hubbell, Technical Evangelist for the Microsoft Accessibility Unit, “Technology can make such a difference in the lives of these kids, yet many wouldn't have the exposure to it without programs like these.” The System Access software, which is the accessible "glue" that brings sound, magnification and more to the whole program, was donated by Serotek Corporation. The Clovernook Center for the Blind provided the first camp site and its volunteers were on hand to lend camper assistance throughout the week. “We're just planting as many seeds as we can," said Karen Schoenharl, a Clovernook computer skills instructor. They may not know the intricacies of everything they have been exposed to in this single week, but they know what the options are.'' As a special surprise to campers, Microsoft, Lenovo and Serotek allowed campers without home computer equipment to retain the hardware and software with which they learned all week. For many, this is an expense that could not have been afforded. The campers were also given U3-enabled USB thumb drives from Clovernook loaded with Serotek's Keys for K-12 program software. The Keys for K-12 program provides a free license to carry the System Access capability USB thumb drive so students can plug the drive into any computer anywhere and have instant access to all resident Windows-based and Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. When unplugged, no trace of usage is left behind on the host computer.
